Ages 4 – 6 Years
Our preschool programme introduces young learners to the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP 1) in a nurturing and inquiry-driven environment. At this foundational stage, children explore learning through play, guided discovery, and meaningful experiences that spark curiosity about the world around them.
Through age-appropriate Units of Inquiry (UoI), students begin developing essential skills in communication, social interaction, early literacy and numeracy, creativity, and self-management. They are encouraged to ask questions, make connections, and build confidence as active participants in their own learning journey.
By beginning their education within the IB framework, children develop the attitudes and attributes of the IB Learner Profile from an early age, becoming caring, confident, and reflective learners. This strong foundation ensures a seamless, confident transition into Primary School (Grades 1–5), where the IB PYP 2–5 programme continues, allowing students to deepen their conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and global-mindedness through a progressive, cohesive learning pathway.
Starting with IB PYP 1 empowers our youngest learners with the skills, mindset, and resilience they need to thrive throughout their primary years and beyond.
This area encourages children’s development of knowledge and understanding of the environment, other people and features of the natural and man-made world to provide a foundation for historical, geographical, scientific and technological learning.
Children learn how to get along well with their peers and adults in the school. They learn about other cultures and religions and learn to respect each other.
Language is used for a variety of purposes in everyday living and learning. It is used to express ideas, to give and gain information, for imaginative purposes and thinking. At JoyKids language development is integrated across all areas of learning. Children are encouraged to use their language skills broadly and imaginatively. For instance, when planning projects children present their information as reports, on video and audio tapes, through debate, as plays, dramas, enactments, as games or as stories.
In the early years, we attempt to interest a child in environmental mathematics. In the process, we bring about the development of Lower Order Thinking Skills, e.g. classifying, comparing, ordering, patterning, measuring, counting and problem-solving with numerals. Children will also acquire Mathematical concepts and knowledge in their learning process.
JoyKids recognises physical education as an important aspect of a child’s development. It not only contributes to a long-term healthy lifestyle, participating in sports develops teamwork and social abilities.
Our physical education curriculum for preschool children is unique; we integrated different types of sports in the curriculum throughout the year which gradually build upon each other.
Children in preschool will participate in swimming in the first term to practice gross motor skills, coordination and self-awareness through low-impact movements. As children gain more strength, we challenge them further by introducing them to rock climbing, which engages the whole body and requires some degree of strategy to stay on the wall.
Finally, as the children mature, they engage in gymnastics lessons where they focus on hand-eye coordination, finer movements and motor skills. Children will also work together in teams to accomplish drills and exercises which gives them the chance to interact and learn team awareness.
We believe that the arts provide a unique way of seeing, thinking and knowing about ourselves and the world. Children at JoyKids are encouraged to develop creative skills through a wide variety of art forms and to use these across all areas of learning.
